The resultas reported

Over 4 months: Claude-written first lines got 6.8% replies (3.1% positive); templated problem-frame openers got 7.2% (3.4% positive). AI personalization cost 2 to 3 hours per 1,000 leads vs about 20 minutes per campaign for the template.

Before spending hours on AI-personalized openers, split-test them against one sharp problem-frame template. In his data the template won; his takeaway is better lists, not better openers.

If you sell: run it before your 10am

  1. Pick one list segment and split it in two at random.
  2. Half A gets an AI-written first line per lead. Half B gets one problem-frame opener for the whole segment.
  3. Keep subject, body and call to action identical.
  4. Track reply rate, positive reply rate and hours spent for each half.
  5. Keep the winner and put the saved time into list quality.

My buyers are [role] at [type of company]. The main problem my offer solves is [problem]. Write 5 one-sentence cold email openers that name this problem the way the buyer would say it, with no flattery, no “I noticed”, and under 20 words. Then tell me which one you would test first and why.

If you lead a team: roll it out

  1. Make this A/B test required before approving any per-lead AI personalization spend.

Watch out for

  • He runs a cold email agency, so the post doubles as a pitch.
  • One sender’s data; your list may differ. Run your own test.
